This still called room " Chambre de l' Evêque " was particularly frequented by the Bishop
of Carcassonne, Mgr Félix Arsène Billard
( 1829-1901 ), who was the protective of the Abbot Saunière. The
fate of these two personalities was confidentially
linked and their personality so enigmatic as was the sudden wealth acquired during their ministry.
Both of them were staunch royalists, liked splendours,
good food and good alcohols... When Monseigneur Billard
died, his successor Monseigneur de Beauséjour,
made only few stays here, because as the opposite of
Mgr Billard he was an austere and stiff man.

The abbot Bérenger Saunière ( 1852-1917
), reverent of the small parish of Rennes le Château,
( about 80 kms away from here ) remains still today
a very important
enigmatic figure because of the fabulous treasure which
he would have discovered. That of Blanche of Castile?...
Knight Templars ?... Visigoths ?... Kings of France
?... Cathars ?...
An important number of websites, books or films evokes this subject, and the success
of the Da Vinci Code aroused an important curiosity
on this mystery of Rennes-le-Château, a visit of this
small village is a must so much the place is magic. (

After the fall of the Second Empire, the Duke of
Bordeaux, Count de Chambord (1820-1883), was about to
rise on the throne of France under the name of Henri
V. He married the archduchess Marie-Thérèse
of Austria (1817-1886)
of the Habsburg dynasty of Austria. The Countess de Chambord did not become the last
Queen of France, but she always showed herself
very generous with the abbot Saunière, also a royalist.

Princess Zita of Bourbon Parma (1892-1989 ) belonged like the Countess of
Chambord, by marriage to the dynasty of Habsburg.
At the age of 19, she married Archduke Charles great-nephew of the Emperor
François-Joseph husband of legendary Empress Sissi, who was to become in 1916
Charles I, the last Emperor of Austria
and King of Hungary, and so she then became the last Empress of Austria. Many mysteries remain on the
nature and the real contents of the contacts or the
exchanges established between the Abbot Saunière
and the Court of the Austro-Hungarian Empire |

She was the faithful handmaid and probably the confident
of the Abbot Saunière.
It is to her that
returned all the patrimony left by the Reverent at his
death in 1917.
But she kept for ever in her
grave the secret of
Rennes-le-Château, when she died in 1953 at the
age of 85.
